Punjabi in informal schools: minister

PROVINCIAL Minister for Education Mian Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman has said that with a view to increasing literacy rate and promoting mother tongue, Punjabi language will be adopted as medium of instruction in non formal schools of literacy department. The amount worth Rs. 50 million has been earmarked for this development scheme. In addition to that, under the Punjab Literacy and Livelihood Programme, the learners will also be imparted technical education at the cost of Rs 385 million.
It was expressed by him while talking to different delegations on Sunday.
The minister said the modern research had revealed that education through mother tongue had been proved very helpful to educate the illiterate people in the world. Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman further stated that this scheme was being introduced to make the non-formal schools more attractive and result-oriented for promotion of literacy.
All the people learn mother tongue at their homes and acquire mastery over it without going to schools. They can easily understand the meaning and comprehension of lesson, he added. He further said the amount allocated for this purpose would be spent on preparation of the textbooks, teachers’ training and provision of learning materials.
The minister further said that under the Punjab Literacy and Livelihood Programme, center for skill training and literacy would be opened in Punjab. The major targets of this scheme are provision of literacy material for the centers, technical and vocational training, component of learners, research components at professional and monitoring and evaluation.
